Abstract
Advanced composite materials and structures, particularly thermoset resin-based composites reinforced with fibers, play a crucial role in Iran's key industries. These materials have become preferred alternatives to traditional metals due to their superior mechanical properties and low weight. However, composite waste generated across various industries poses serious environmental, economic, and technical challenges due to its complex crosslinked structure and biological non-degradability. The accumulation of such waste not only occupies landfill space but also represents significant resource loss. Research activities in Iran have shown progress in composite technologies, especially in additively manufacturing procedures known as 3D printing; however, the systematic use of recycled materials in this segment of the industry as feedstock has not yet received adequate attention. This paper comprehensively examines large-scale recycling methods for these wastes along with their advantages and limitations. Five principal composite recycling approaches are analyzed: reuse/repurpose, resize/reshape, mechanical/thermal/chemical and hybrid conversion processes, aggregates, and recovery. Subsequently, key performance indicators are extracted for these methods based on Iran's local conditions, weighted, and prioritized using the SMART multi-criteria decision-making model. This study emphasizes the imperative need for establishing a circular economy in composite waste management and positions recycling as a strategic opportunity for industrial self-sufficiency and sustainable development.
