English

Bioplastics, as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, play a pivotal role in the circular economy. Derived from bio-based sources such as corn, sugarcane, or cellulose, or being biodegradable, these materials contribute to reducing plastic pollution and conserving resources by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Bioplastics are classified into three main categories: fossil-based biodegradable, bio-based non-biodegradable, and bio-based/biodegradable. They are utilized in medical applications (e.g., sutures and tissue scaffolds), pharmaceuticals (tablet fillers), and tissue engineering (bone and cardiac regeneration). Characteristics such as biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and renewability make them an ideal choice for sustainable applications. However, challenges including high production costs, insufficient recycling infrastructure, and competition with food resources limit their widespread adoption. The circular economy facilitates the reuse and composting of bioplastics through mechanical, chemical, and biological recycling. This study emphasizes the role of bioplastics in waste reduction and the achievement of sustainable development, particularly in the healthcare industry, and proposes solutions to overcome existing challenges.
